Long Term Health Care

More and more people today are worried about the costs of long-term health care. They are worried if something happens to them they may run out of money and burn through their reserves. The average nursing home stay is 2.5 years of care and the average cost is over $130.00 per day. That is the average yet in many areas with nursing shortages and higher income demographics the rates are more significant. It is estimated that more than 10% of us who reach age 65 will nursing home care for more than 5-years.

It is very important to have long-term health care insurance to:

Protect your assets

Provide peace of mind

Provide assurance of quality care

Provide choice and control over receipt of care

Avoid dependence

Receive tax advantages

Paying for Long-Term Care? Here is The Bottom Line:

Medicare – This program may pay for skilled nursing facility care for a very short period of time – but no longer than 100 days – and only when you meet all the Medicare requirements for daily skilled care.

Medical – This program, called Medicaid outside California, may pay for skilled, rehabilitation and custodial care that is not covered by Medicare, but only if you first “spend-down” assets to federal and state legal impoverishment level guidelines.

Personal or Family Assets – Most people provide for long-term care expenses from personal or family income, assets and resources.

Long-Term Care Insurance Programs – Specially designed programs to pay for long-term health care expenses. HIPAA defines Federal tax treatment of insurance policies that provide long-term care coverage. Policies that meet certain criteria are designated as “qualified long-term care insurance” and will receive certain tax incentives: the cost of coverage may be deductible and long term care benefits received will not be reported as taxable income. Please consult your tax advisor for information about your personal situation.

Play it safe and know your options regarding long-term health care and know protect your assets. Think on this.

Bringing Scientific Rigor to Medical Research Using Blockchain Technology

Blockchain technology applied to medical research can improve trust in science by creating an unchangeable, time stamped record of the research findings. Blockchain technology, invented by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2008, ensures that transactions entered into a ledger cannot be changed with time. As applied to the cryptocurrency bitcoin (BTC), the result is a monetary system that, cannot be manipulated by a centralized government because it creates a permanent and accurate record of all transactions. The strength of the system comes from its use of a distributed database as compared to current monetary systems that require a centralized database such as is used by credit card companies and banks. Applying this same technology to medical research increases trust in the results because just like bitcoin, the transactions (scientific data collected) are permanently archived in an unchangeable, immutable manner.

The exchange of money, just like the conduct of medical research, requires a high level of trust. Money in the past has generated this trust through government regulations and central bank oversight. Medical research in the past has attempted to create high levels of trust through peer review conducted by reputable medical journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine. Both methods of generating trust rely on a trusted central authority, either the government or a medical journal. As such, both methods are highly susceptible to fraud via corruption or innocent errors of the centralized authority. This has led to widespread distrust in medical research. Bitcoin operates differently, because it sets up a method of relying on a distributed network based upon a mathematical algorithm, rather than centralized authority susceptible to human error.

Financial transactions require perhaps the highest level of trust. People need to know that all transactions recorded in the ledger be entirely accurate and totally resistant to being changed in the future. Because blockchain technology as implemented in bitcoin has earned this trust, bitcoin has become a widely used store of value with a market capitalization of over $100 billion USD. When other cryptocurrencies are considered, the total trust in blockchain based financial systems exceeds $250 billion USD. Similarly, health care professionals need to be able to trust that data obtained from medical research is both completely accurate and completely immutable. Physicians need to know that medical research isn’t plagiarized or fraudulent in any way. Blockchain technology has made bitcoin a trusted, global currency. In the same way, blockchain based medical research will greatly increase trust in the results and as a result, improved medical care.

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis Recovery Testimonial

In 1989 I was medically diagnosed with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, due to chemical poisoning from pesticides such as 245-T, Network, Roundup, Asulox and Malathian and heavy metal poisoning from Mercury (due to toxicity from amalgam fillings in my teeth), aluminium and lead.

After consultations with many doctors, specialists and natural health therapists, including Homeopaths and Acupuncturists, I was told that I would never regain normal health again due to the length of time I had been ill with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis. At that time, I wasn’t able to work, couldn’t sleep at night, had no energy and reacted to almost everything I ate!

I was getting pretty desperate at that stage to get my health, life and career back to normal when I met Philip Rafferty while he was doing allergy testing in a health food store. As I already knew of my allergies, I thought I would put him to the test. You can imagine my surprise when in a couple of minutes of using Kinesiology; he was able to correctly identify what my allergies were.

My life at that time had been a real struggle. I had just undergone two years of medical treatment and was taking all the right remedies and nutrition; however, I was still suffering from extreme fatigue, hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), chronic Candida, food allergies, poor concentration, short term memory loss, acne and had very little energy. I then decided to have several Kinesiology treatments, and to my surprise, I started feeling much better.

Kinesiology Got Rid Of My Allergies, Lots Of Health Issues And My Myalgic Encephalomyelitis
To help me understand, Philip explained that Kinesiology encompasses holistic health disciplines that use gentle manual muscle monitoring to obtain information about a person’s well-being. It may assist with pain, stress, allergies, TMJ problems, toxicity, heavy metals, candida, dehydration, learning, sabotages, and more. Kinesiology realigned the muscles in my body, and as the muscles are connected with the organs, puts the organs back into balance, and this allowed my body to assimilate nutrition and water properly. He said that by putting the muscles back into balance, that my body would be able to heal itself from Myalgic Encephalomyelitis.

While my muscles were out of balance, my body was using up all its energy just trying to function on a basic level, therefore leaving me with no energy to do anything else. After several Kinesiology treatments my food allergies reduced, my blood sugar came back to normal, the severe cystic acne on my face cleared dramatically, I started to gain weight and I had a lot more energy.

Amazing Results Recovering From Myalgic Encephlomylitis Lead Me To A New Career
At the time of seeing Philip Rafferty he started teaching Kinergetics, a new modality of Kinesiology here in Melbourne, Australia and asked me if I would be interested in learning this for myself. After having such amazing results and a full recovery from Myalgic Encephalomyelitis due to Kinesiology, I was curious to find out how it actually worked and why.

I found learning Kinergetics absolutely fascinating. After completing the whole series of eight levels of Kinergetics, I then trained to become a Kinergetics Instructor and began teaching Kinergetics in 1994.

Always interested to learn and grow more, I went on to attain a “Diploma on Health Sciences in Holistic Kinesiology” at the Kinesiology College for Energetic Sciences in Carlton, Melbourne, Australia.

I love practicing and teaching Kinesiology and Kinergetics, and seeing the life-changing results in my clients and mentoring students. I continue to work using my Kinesiology skills and knowledge using Transformation Coaching working with many people all around the world.

I work with clients with a broad range of issues relating to Myalgic Encephalomylitis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Lyme Disease including resolving allergies, candida, heavy metal toxicity, emotional issues, stress, pain, TMJ, dehydration, sabotage and much more.

Weight Maintenance of an Elderly Person

As a person grows older, the basal metabolic rate of the body tends to slow down primarily due to lack of activity and regular physical exercise. As the age of person increases, the calorie requirement of the body decreases. As the senses of smell and taste tend to decrease in older people, they often find food less palatable, resulting in situations called under-eating. However, vital nutrients are still essential for the body even at this age and require proper nutritional care supported by healthy diet.

Eating less during old age often provides an invitation for various unwanted diseases. Older people who are underweight are easily prone to get infected primarily due to a depleted immune system that fails to offer protection against invading pathogens. Apart from this, under weight persons are at an increased risk of developing various other diseases including anemia and osteoporosis. Nutritional abnormalities in older people could sometimes be an indicative of a serious medical complication such as cancer, dementia, heart failure or depression.

However, there are multiple ways through which elder persons can gain back the weight. According to doctors and nutritionists, elder people should take diet that is rich in nutrients and vitamins. These include fruits, vegetables, fluids and fibers. Dental and oral problems could also lead to decreased diet intake. Hence, it is important to have a routine checkup of gums, teeth and mouth. Elder persons often find it easy to taken liquid foods rather than thicker foods. Other options include serving finger-foods, liquid food supplements and serving familiar, palatable and tastier foods that are presented in a pleasing manner.

A Detailed Insight on Symptoms of Piles

This condition is classified into two types which are:

  • Internal Piles: The internal piles occur within the rectum are not painful due to lack of sensing nerves. At times, it collapses and protrudes outside anal sphincter, which appears like moist pads of skin. This prolapsed haemorrhoids and can be treated with laser surgery for piles.
  • External Piles: The external piles are present in the anus and thus can be more uncomfortable. When this prolapses outside (due to the movement of stool) they become visible. Blood clots occur on them, leading to a painful stage known as thrombosis. When the external piles get thromboses it turns from pink to blue and could even bleed.

What Are The Causes of Piles?

An individual at any age can be the victim of piles. It is a common diseases, that affects over 50% of the people at some point or the other. However, they are usually seen during pregnancy or elderly age, when the haemorrhoids become weak. No matter what the cause behind this condition might be, getting the best piles treatment is of utmost importance.

The four situations that increases the chance of developing piles include:

  • Chronic Constipation
  • Ageing
  • Hereditary factors and
  • Pregnancy

In chronic constipation, excess pressure is applied on the rectum making the veins push against the wall of anus, resulting into feeble and weak anus muscles. This ruptures the haemorrhoids which bleeds making stools even tougher to eject. It is often accompanied with pain and sensitivity. In case of ageing, the tissues present across the lining area get less supportive and affect the haemorrhoids veins.

Similarly, in pregnancy the pressure of baby lying in the anus and rectum breaks the veins and causes piles. Other than that, in certain cases people have inherited weakness at the anal region that makes them prone to this condition.

Know More About the Symptoms of Piles

It must be noted that the symptoms of pile do vary and is influenced by the cause and nature of the condition.

Some of the common signs that are often faced by people are:

  • A feeling of hard lump at the anus region. It is usually coagulated blood that is often seen in external piles.
  • Bright red blood comes out after bowel movement
  • Discharge of mucus when bowels pas
  • A feeling of having full bowel, even after going to the toilet
  • Area around the anus turns sore and red and
  • Itchiness and inflammation at the affected area

A good practice is to consult with a doctor immediately when you come across at least two or more signs of piles.

Nail Care for, Men? Of Course!

It is often assumed when people mention nail care, that the recipients of such services would be women. Beautiful day spas continue to spring up all over America. These luxurious retreats offer women an escape from their hectic lives and offer some much deserved pampering. Sure, we may see the occasional advertisement for a “couples” massage or maybe even a “male” day at the spa. But when it comes to feet, many people imagine women with beautiful healthy nails polished in exquisite colors and designs.

So what do we do about the large percentage of men who simply need a safe and comfortable place to have their feet and nails professionally cared for? We can’t ignore the needs of thousands of men who are, in fact, perfect candidates for foot and nail care. Nearly 50% of people over the age of 60 have experienced onychomycosis, or toenail fungus. Once this infection takes hold, it can be very difficult to treat. Nails become yellow, thickened and brittle, often requiring the tools and expertise of a medical professional to treat.

Many men have difficulty maintaining good nail care because they cannot reach their feet. Hip and knee replacements are some common reasons, as are arthritis and back pain. Clipping one’s own nails when vision or balance problems exist could become a safety issue. Safety should always be a priority in cutting one’s nails since the possibility of nicking oneself could result in infection. This is especially important for diabetics, where progressive infection could lead to amputation.

Some men have painful corns and calluses which can interfere with their activity level. Regularly reducing rough areas of the feet, adding cushioning to susceptible areas, and moisturizing the feet daily, will delay the return of calluses. This will enable one to continue enjoying an active lifestyle.

Nail care for men needs to become the norm rather than the exception. Those who maintain healthy feet and nails are able to continue to participate in their favorite activities, and have fewer complaints of foot pain.

Some seniors reach a point where they think it is too late for foot care. Please know it is never too late. If you feel embarrassed by the condition of your feet or nails, please schedule a visit to have them cared for by your health care provider or foot care nurse. It will be the first step in a healthier you!

The Best Health Benefits of Aloe Vera

There are many health benefits of aloe Vera:

  • Treating skin disorders
  • Promoting wound healing
  • Fighting allergies
  • Maintaining healthy hair and scalp
  • Treating teeth and gum disorders
  • Reducing inflammation and pain
  • Promoting healthy immune system

Elaborating further, aloe acts as a deep skin moisturizer, increasing collagen and reducing pigment formation. It cleans the skin by removing bacteria and also nourishes it. By eliminating dead skin cells, scars, wrinkles and blemishes are eliminated.

The aloe plant is very effective for cuts, boils, abscesses, cold sores and skin ulcers. The impurities are drained out and the natural healing process of the skin is sped up.

Because of allergies, pain and itching occur and aloe Vera acts as an anti-allergenic substance, allowing the body to deal the harmful substances.

Deep penetrating actions by aloe allows nutrients to access the scalp. It soothes scalp itching and the dead skin cells are discarded allowing new growth which combats dandruff and seborrhea infections.

The active aloe ingredients reduces inflammation of the gum and rids the mouth of pain. Mouth sores and surgical wounds heal better with the application of aloe gel.

Pure aloe also reduces body inflammation and pain by externally and internally attaching the symptom. As a juice it treats symptoms of IBS, indigestion colitis, peptic ulcers and even excessive stomach acid.

Because of its wide range of vitamins and minerals, aloe Vera is the best immune system stimulant. It creates in the body a better defense against viruses and bacteria and allows the body’s own healing abilities to tackle foreign substances.

A word of caution, Aloe Vera is not to be used as a substitute for genuine medical emergencies. A doctor should always be consulted prior to using aloe Vera especially if you are pregnant or have been diagnosed with diabetes or gall bladder problems.

Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Pros and Cons

Within the last few years there as been an aggressive push on the part of government, professional organizations, and other authorities to institute a uniform EMR system. This includes generous subsidies allocated by recent legislation and mandatory legal requirements to occur in the next few years. As a practicing and academic physician with a masters degree in public health, I would like to briefly note some observations.

Intuitively, a uniform, easily accessible EMR seems like a very good idea. In fact, one of my major difficulties in practice occurs when a new patient arrives without copies of previous diagnostic studies or lists of medications. This is compounded in an incapacitated or elderly individual with many medical conditions and medications, and when there is a language barrier. Such patients may have great difficulty, or be incapable of, relaying this information to the new physician. To go online and immediately retrieve it would be very helpful indeed.

However, in these days of lower reimbursement and higher practice volumes, time spent imputing information may be time spent away from patient care. You may have experienced a visit where your doctor, using an EMR, has his eyes and hands on the computer much more than on you. I personally have accompanied relatives to physicians and emergency rooms where the doctor spent almost no time talking to, or examining the patient but instead sat in front of the computer, recording or retrieving information.

Also, these electronic records include templates where “check off” of existing information, rather than recording of original information is involved. This helps improve physician reimbursement by conforming with insurance company guidelines for level of service. It does little, however, to record the doctor’s thought processes or enhance the necessary medical information provided by this specific physician.

Don’t get me wrong. Good information is a good thing. But, it must be good for the patient and not just there to satisfy an insurance company. Also, it must contribute to, not detract from, the overall quality of care.

Why the Earth Your Home is Built on May Be Sick

Many of us spend our hard earned money and our valuable time with alternative health care in hopes of improving our health, mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. However, in our pursuit of good health, we often overlook the important role our home plays in supporting that health.

If we are living in an unhealthy home, then all of our good work is negated and the improvement in our health remains elusive.

The earth your home is built upon may have energetic influences that are sick. That sick energy emitting from the ground may affect your own body’s energetic system by lowering your immune system.

We know through science, that everything is energy and we know that emotions have an energetic charge or signal. If there has been war, death, illness, sadness, divorce, or any other emotional or physical trauma occurring on your home’s property, then the energetic of those experiences may have left an energetic imprint that could be affecting your own body’s ability to heal.

The earth’s energy system of ley lines, geopathic stress – which is the electrical charge created as water moves along earth lines, and electro magnetic pollution emitting from all the electricity we are exposed to, may also contribute in creating an unhealthy home.

Think of it this way: Your body has a meridian system an acupuncturist might balance to help you regain or maintain health.

The earth has a similar system of meridian lines (ley lines, geopathic stress,) running in all directions and your home can act as an acupuncture point on the earth’s energy system.

Sometimes geopathic stress, (the earth’s meridian system) will run through a cemetery, landfill, toxic waste site, or underground water. When this happens the ley line or geopathic stress becomes toxic. Because ley lines and geopathic areas of stress are energy, they can affect everything they come in contact with. These toxic lines can radiate up from the earth and into your home.

This means, if your home is built on unhealthy toxic areas of geopathic stress, it can become an unhealthy environment for you to live in. Just like your body’s meridian system, the earth’s meridian system can be cleared and balanced bringing your home back to a state of health which can then support your pursuit of health and well being.

What Are Centers of Excellence at Hospitals?

When I first began researching information on various hospitals across the United States, I came across many hospitals that offered a variety of Centers of Excellence. I was curious as to what constituted a Center of Excellence as opposed to just listing a program as a specialty service, so I decided to research this as well.

What I found out was that a Center of Excellence essentially means that a hospital specializes in the treatment of a certain illness or specializes in particular treatments. Centers of excellence can be anything from heart or cancer care to neurosurgery or organ transplants. Some hospitals offer a variety of Centers of Excellence whereas other hospitals might just offer one or two.

It was more difficult to find out how a hospital was able to claim the distinction of having a Center of Excellence. From what I could gather, each individual program and treatment has particular criteria that needs to be met in order for the hospital to state that their program is a Center of Excellence. They might require that the treatments be performed by a certain type of doctor or that a certain amount of treatments are performed annually.

I also found that different health care programs and health insurance programs will also designate a program of a hospital as a Center of Excellence based on their own criteria. This might mean that they are more likely to recommend this hospital as opposed to another hospital. They do this as a service to the patients who have their insurance to help them make an informed decision about which program is right for them. If you have a question about a particular hospitals Center of Excellence designation, you should ask them about how they received the designation and who gave it to them.
